Based on a very famous story (which I have not heard before) Princess Kaguya is a beautifully animated piece which will speak to parents more than most casual viewers. The plot sees a simple woodcutter discovering a tiny princess inside a bamboo shoot, taking her home and, as she grows quickly, trying to ensure she has all the best things in life. To spoil the film for you early in my comments, this thread ends with her leaving to return to the moon, pursuing her own path in her life. There is a lot that goes on in the meantime, but this is the elements that kept me engaged – and perhaps because I am seeing the "growing up and finding their own path" journey first hand.
This aspect is quite touching in how well played it is, however it is a simple aspect which isn't narrative per se. Instead the narrative moves slowly across changes in the life of Kaguya, suitors trying to win her hand, and the specifics of all of that. This is pretty engaging, but not as much as the critics would have you believe. The film does run long, and I'm not wholly convinced that it has the pace and content to sustain it. Like some others have mentioned, I did find my attention wavering a few times across the running time. This pace is helped by the style and animation, which creates a sense of patient beauty in how the film looks – so the opposite for example of the Batman Lego Movie, which feels like it is rushing you in and out of the movie from start to finish. Kaguya instead is beautifully animated in a way that seems so contrary to what can be done now with computer animation – where anything is possible, this focuses on creating beautiful frames with delicate strokes, and not having more than is necessary. As everyone says, it is a beautiful film in this way.
The voicework in the English version maybe follows this too closely, and there is a certain 'downplayed' feel to the delivery from most of the cast. I think it all still works, and the famous names do generally hit their marks and deliver well – but I can understand the comments from others who say the cast occasionally sound bored, or subdued in their delivery; I took it as them matching the tone of the film and was fine with it.
In the end, the animation is beautiful and it creates an engaging tone and pace for the film, even if I did think the content was not strong enough for the long running time and the slower pace. At heart though, the story of parents seeing their child grow was the element that stuck with me, and made it a mostly rewarding film, even if it is the animation that stands out above everything else.

I think what makes it more unsettling, is that they don't say a thing, only to attendant does. The Budda (I believe he is) stands there and observes, it's very distilled and purified and almost artificial, which makes sense when we learn of the Robe of the Moon. [8] Plot [ edit] A bamboo cutter named Sanuki no Miyatsuko discovers a miniature girl inside a glowing bamboo shoot. Believing her to be a divine presence, he and his wife decide to raise her as their own, calling her "Princess". The girl grows rapidly, causing her parents to marvel and earning her the nickname "Takenoko" (Little Bamboo) from the other village children. Sutemaru, the oldest among Kaguya's friends, develops a close relationship with her. Miyatsuko comes upon gold and fine cloth in the bamboo grove in the same way he found his daughter. He takes these as proof of her divine royalty and begins planning to make her a proper princess. He relocates the family to the capital, forcing her to leave her friends behind. She finds herself in a mansion, replete with servants. She is also saddled with a governess who is tasked with taming her into a noblewoman. She struggles with the restraints of nobility, arguing that life should be full of laughter and struggle. When the girl comes of age, she is granted the formal name of "Princess Kaguya" for the light and life that radiates from her. Miyatsuko holds a celebration in commemoration of her naming. At the celebration, Kaguya overhears partygoers ridiculing her father's attempts to turn a peasant girl into a noble through money. Kaguya flees the capital in despair and runs back to the mountains, seeking Sutemaru and her other friends, but discovers that they have all moved away. She passes out in the snow and awakens back at the party. Kaguya grows in beauty, attracting suitors. Five men of noble standing court her, comparing her to mythical treasures. Kaguya tells them she will only marry whoever can bring her the mythical treasure mentioned. Two suitors attempt to persuade her with counterfeits. The third abandons his conquest out of cowardice, and the fourth attempts to woo her with flattering lies. When one of the men is killed in his quest, Kaguya falls into depression. Eventually, the Emperor takes notice of her. Taken with her beauty, he makes advances toward her, revolting her. Kaguya then demonstrates the ability to disappear at will, surprising the Emperor. Understanding that he has been too forward, the Emperor leaves. Kaguya reveals to her parents that she originally came from the Moon after it spoke to her. Once a resident there, she broke its laws, hoping to be exiled to Earth so that she could experience mortal life. When the Emperor made his advances, she silently begged the Moon to help her. Having heard her prayer, the Moon will reclaim her during the next full moon. Kaguya confesses her attachment to Earth and her reluctance to leave. Miyatsuko swears to protect Kaguya and begins assembling defensive forces. Kaguya returns to her hometown and finds Sutemaru, who vows to protect her. Kaguya demonstrates the ability to fly but loses it when she flies by the Moon. Sutemaru, who flew with her, wakes up later, thinking it was a dream. On the night of the full moon, a procession of celestial beings led by the Buddha descends from the Moon, and Miyatsuko is unable to stop it. An attendant offers Kaguya a robe that will erase her memories of Earth but she begs the attendant to grant her a last moment with her parents. The attendant, however, drapes the robe around her, and she appears to forget about her life on Earth. They leave, and Miyatsuko and his wife are distraught. Kaguya looks back one last time, and cries silently as she recognizes the love from her parents. [10] Production [ edit] As a child, Takahata read The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. He recalled that he struggled to relate and sympathize with the protagonist; to him, the "heroine’s transformation was enigmatic" and that it "didn’t evoke any empathy from [him]". [11] In 1960, Takahata was preparing for a potential adaptation for his employer Toei Animation, which eventually was abandoned. [12] After rereading the tale, he realized the story's potential to be entertaining, as long as an adaptation allowed the audience to understand how Princess Kaguya felt. [11] [13] Studio Ghibli revealed that Isao Takahata was working on a feature-length film in 2008. [14] Takahata announced at the 62nd Locarno International Film Festival in 2009 that he intended to direct a film based on the anonymous Japanese literary tale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. [15] The Tale of the Princess Kaguya was financed by Nippon TV, whose late chairman, Seiichiro Ujiie, gave ¥ 5, 000, 000, 000 (approximately US$ 40, 000, 000) towards the project. [16] Ujiie loved Takahata's work, and pleaded with Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki to let Takahata make one more film. [17] Ujiie died on 3 March 2011, but not before being able to view the script and some of the storyboards. [18] To make sure the audience emotionally connected with the film, it was important to Takahata that viewers were able to "imagine or recall the reality deep within the drawings", rather than be distracted by a realistic art style. [19] He wanted to have people "recollect the realities of this life by sketching ordinary human qualities with simple props". [20] To assist with this vision, Osamu Tanabe provided the character designs and animation, and Kazuo Oga drew the watercolor backgrounds. [16] The release of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya was finally confirmed by Studio Ghibli and distributor Toho on 13 December 2012. [21] Soundtrack [ edit] In 2012, Shin-ichiro Ikebe was announced to write the film's score. However, in 2013, Joe Hisaishi replaced Ikebe as the composer. This is the first and only time that Hisaishi has scored a film directed by Isao Takahata. [22] The theme song "When I Remember This Life" was written and performed by Nikaido Kazumi. [23] [24] [25] The music from the film's original soundtrack was released on 20 November 2013. All tracks are written by Joe Hisaishi, except where noted. Track listing No. Title Length 1. [26] However, in February 2013, distributor Toho announced that the release of Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari would be delayed to Fall 2013, citing concerns that the storyboards were not yet complete. [27] [28] On 12 March 2014, independent distributor GKIDS announced that it had acquired the US rights for the film and that it would release an English dub version produced by Studio Ghibli and Frank Marshall. [29] Chloë Grace Moretz is the voice of the title character in the English dub. It was released in select theatres in North America on 17 October 2014 and was also released on DVD and Blu-ray in Japan on 3 December 2014. [30] [31] The film was selected to be screened as part of the Directors' Fortnight section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. [32] Its North American première took place at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival during the festival's "Masters" program. [33] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] The film debuted at first place during its opening weekend in Japan, grossing ¥  284 million ( US$  2. 8 million). [34] By 2 February 2014, the film had grossed ¥  2 313 602 733 (US$22 613 153) at the Japanese box office. [35] The film went on to gross ¥2. 47 billion ( $25, 348, 933) in Japan. [36] Overseas, the film grossed $ 703 232 in North America, [37] and $ 969 920 in other territories, [38] for a worldwide total of $26, 980, 529. Critical reception [ edit] Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes assigned the film a score of 100% "Certified Fresh" with an average rating of 8. 21/10 based on 92 reviews. The critics' consensus says, "Boasting narrative depth, frank honesty, and exquisite visual beauty, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is a modern animated treasure with timeless appeal. " [39] In February 2014, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya placed 4th in both Kinema Junpo 's Best Ten and their Reader's Choice Awards. [40] David Ehrlich of The A. V. Club gave the film an A, deeming it "the best animated movie of the year, " adding that it is "destined to be remembered as one of the revered Studio Ghibli’s finest achievements. " [41] Nicolas Rapold of The New York Times praised the artwork calling it "exquisitely drawn with both watercolor delicacy and a brisk sense of line. We think this movie stands out for: A lot or a little? The parents' guide to what's in this movie. Children don't need money and social status to succeed, but rather love, compassion, encouragement, and the freedom to be themselves. Also shows how beauty shouldn't be the only reason to fall in love with someone -- and how striving for social status will ultimately leave you dissatisfied. Positive Role Models & Representations Kaguya is kind and loving, and her parents adore her and are so grateful to the universe for entrusting her to their care. Sutemaru is a great friend to Kaguya. A couple of characters die or disappear, including one who dies (plummets to his death) while attempting to reach a treasure for Princess Kaguya. Men tackle and apprehend a young man who has stolen goods. Kissing. Nonsexual nudity in scenes that show a mother's breast as she nurses a baby. A reference to one suitor's reputation for leaving young women in disgrace. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking What parents need to know Parents need to know that The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a retelling of a 10th-century Japanese fable about a tiny, mysterious princess who sprouts from a bamboo stalk and is raised by an elderly bamboo cutter and his wife. The movie, which is available in both the original Japanese (with English subtitles) and in dubbed English, should appeal to mature elementary schoolers who are already fans of movies like Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. There are a couple of scenes of violence -- including the death or disappearance of a couple of characters -- as well as a moment when a woman's bare breast is shown because she's nursing. Families who enjoy fantasies and folk tales should consider seeing this unique film together; it has serious themes and moments of heartbreak, but it also offers strong messages about what children need to thrive (love, encouragement, and the freedom to be themselves) and how striving for social status will ultimately leave you dissatisfied. THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA retells an ancient Japanese folk tale about an elderly bamboo cutter (voiced by James Caan in the English dubbed version) who finds a tiny, magical princess sprouting from a shining bamboo stalk. Shocked by the discovery, he runs home with the tiny princess in his hand. There, the old man and his wife ( Mary Steenburgen) watch as the she transforms into a baby. The baby grows faster than other kids and is soon a delightful, curious girl out enjoying the forest with the local boys. One day, the bamboo cutter finds that the bamboo is shining again, this time with treasure. With his newfound fortune, the bamboo cutter moves to the city to give his princess a proper "young lady's" education, complete with an uptight royal governess. Despondent about moving away from her beloved country home, Kaguya's ( Chole Grace Moretz) only joy is an outdoor garden she tends for herself. When she comes of age, tales of her beauty reach the highest levels of Japanese society, and five titled men vie for her hand in marriage. But Kaguya still misses her first crush, Sutemaru (Darren Criss), from her childhood home. Is it any good? Director Isao Takahata's (Studio Ghibli co-founder) poignant hand-drawn adventure is gorgeously animated. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya  is sure to make audiences think about everything from parent-child relationships to the oppressive trappings of class to the far-reaching consequences of ignoring your child's potential. This is far from the typical happily-ever-after stories many families are used to seeing, but fans of Japanese animation may not be surprised by the serious themes and at times heartbreaking scenes. The animation stresses the beauty of the natural and the ridiculousness of the artificial. The story does the same, largely in the form of the governess' demands that Kaguya pluck her eyebrows, blacken her teeth, pull up her hair, and never, ever run -- which are all depicted as ludicrous (much like in Brave). Kaguya yearns for the forest, for freedom, and for her beloved Sutemaru, who treated her as an equal, not a prize to possess. Parents may feel a pang of sadness as they relate with both the Bamboo Cutter, who does what he thinks is best for Kaguya's future, and his wife, who understands that what her daughter wants is her forest home and quiet moments of happiness. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the popularity of Japanese animation. Why is it so appealing? The studio behind The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Studio Ghibli, is known for offering alternatives to mainstream Hollywood movies. What sets them apart from animated movies made in the United States? What do you think the message of this fairy tale is? Were you surprised by the way the story ended? What would you have liked to happen? How do the characters in  The Tale of Princess Kaguya  demonstrate compassion? Why is this an important character strength? Kaguya-hime no monogatari watch online. This was the perfect animated film, the art style felt like a classic oil painting.
When a movie makes you cry its usually for a couple seconds, this made it a couple minutes. I wanted what she wanted but in the tragic end I came to realise this is probably what would happen no matter and that this has earned a spot at the top of Ghibli movies, at the top of anime movies, at the top of animated movies, or even the top of all movies.
I was so used to movies just throwing a happy ending at you that it really shows how good this movie is with Lil Bamboo having to leave forever. Disney needs to take a note, movies can have happy endings as long as it works and Ponyo is the best example of that, but sometimes the perfect happy ending can be too much like if in hunchback of Notre dame (my favourite Disney film) if Quasimoto had to sacrifice himself to kill Frollo and just ended with Esmerelda with the knight, I generally think that would have made the movie better.

Instructed by the village elders to travel westward for a cure, Ashitaka arrives at Tatara, the Iron Town, where he finds himself embroiled in a fierce conflict: Lady Eboshi of Tatara, promoting constant deforestation, stands against Princess San and the sacred spirits of the forest, who are furious at the destruction brought by the humans. As the opposing forces of nature and mankind begin to clash in a desperate struggle for survival, Ashitaka attempts to seek harmony between the two, all the while battling the latent demon inside of him. Princess Mononoke is a tale depicting the connection of technology and nature, while showing the path to harmony that could be achieved by mutual acceptance.

I just saw this movie in Gainesville! It was amazing. I'm sorry, but I just can't stand all the spiteful, smug remarks in the comments of this video made about other movies. Is no one aware that all animated movies require skill and prestige? That animation is difficult, whether 2D or 3D? That because you have a preference, it doesn't automatically make everyone else objectively wrong? The statements made about CGI are what really get me. Please, stop acting like elitists.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated movies this year (for us non-Japanese) Princess Kaguya had me both worried (all the hype) and so excited (it's Studio Ghibli) but when I finally watched it, it was worth the wait, the anxiety and the hype. The animation style is simplistic yet exquisitely done in that simplicity: it echoes the traditional Japanese art and style you won't see in modern-day anime, which I'm not saying is bad, but "Kaguya" is a refreshing breath of air. The voice acting is superb, as is the norm with Ghibli's productions, and the choice of music and songs are almost heartbreakingly beautiful (the harvest song especially. The plot is a little slow and. well, non-exciting, as it is essentially a tale of a girl waiting to be married off: this plot takes up the majority of the film, but the subplots of Kaguya's wishes versus her father's hopes, is constantly there and the viewer is moved by the protagonist's simple desires and wishes. While it lacks the action of its predecessors, it makes up for it with the sheer joy of its own being: once again, the music, animation and characters themselves bring so much life to it.
